Description:
|
Pneumonia is an inflammatory
process involving the pulmonary parenchyma. It is the most
common respiratory infection in the adult population and the
most common cause of respiratory failure in the critically ill
population today. More than 3 million cases are reported each
year. Nosocomial or hospital acquired pneumonia presents a
significant health care problem because it is associated with
mortality rates of up to 60% and community-acquired pneumonia
has a mortality rate of up to 25%. Nursing plays a critical role
in the prevention and management of this serious illness.
